I'm a Northern Virginia-based portrait photographer specializing in both studio and natural light portraits for singles, couples and families.

I document life and love for all bodies in every season.

why ‘greattscott’?

High school, in a lot of ways, was rough. I was a painfully self-conscious high achiever with no game whatsoever. My legs were too long for most pants. But I did have a teacher who called me ‘Great Scott,’ and man, did that take the edge off! I ended up becoming a teacher myself. Some of the faces you see in my work are former students who I continue to adore. When I left teaching in search of something that moved at a more suitable pace for parenthood, I found photography. I found myself! I AM GreattScott.

my approach and philosophy

Taking photographs is one of my favorite things in life. When I take your portrait, it is my goal to get to know you, put you at ease (or pump you up), and find and capture what is special about you. As a mom and former teacher, I have a knack for connecting with young people. As an artist, I love working with you to create images you can hold to your heart. I especially seek to empower women by showing them the unique powers we hold - strength and vulnerability, steadfastness and softness. All the beauty in the world.

When I walk into any situation with my camera, I’m doing two things: getting to know you and observing you and our surroundings. For me, it’s very important that I don’t press my shutter until my subject and I are at ease with each other. Usually that means starting with the kids in the group, because children have the power to make us all feel light. The magic of kids and their willingness to play drives my work, for sure.

Time is one thing none of us can get back, and these moments are important to document for posterity—from momentous occasions to the average day with your kids (the latter being the most important, I think). You will not always have these looks, priorities, worries or needs, and someday, you'll want to go back and see yourself as you were, and reflect there awhile.
